How to Blend Traditional with Trendy
Inspiring Fall Decor
After what seemed like an endless summer, Fall has finally arrived. This means cooler temperatures, vibrant fall foliage, trips to the local orchards for fall crops and a full schedule of art festivals. Many locals claim Fall as their favorite season and it’s easy to understand their enthusiasm.
One Fall perk is the abundance of decorating ideas and options. Combining new with old, synthetic with organic, and modern with traditional is readily accepted. It seems to be an ‘anything goes’ time. Retailers not wanting to miss a great sales opportunity, annually dedicate considerable shelf space for fall themed decorations. Historically, the products tend to be traditional and organic in style. Orange pumpkins, bouquets of golden yellow sunflowers, decorated grape vine wreaths, pine cone potpourri, and fall scented candles. But, for all the traditional decorations, stores will offer a small selection of trendy pieces with the hopes of attracting the “non-traditional” customer (think purple pumpkin with internal lights). Sometimes, those trendsetter pieces are interesting and nice; other years, they puzzle me. Thankfully, the few new styles I’ve recently seen are surprisingly nice. Rather than strange color combinations or crazy designs, the retailers that I visited kept as close to traditional style as possible. Instead of experimenting with non-traditional Fall colors, they’ve introduced muted seasonal tones and an abundance of teal. The decor is easy on the eyes and works with existing traditional decor in any home. While shopping, I saw an abundance of handmade glass pumpkins, copper dinnerware and decor, and beautifully beaded table runners and stemware coasters.
After seeing all the new designs, I carefully considered different ways I could embrace and incorporate the new 2019 decorating trends with my existing decor. I realized that when using muted or bold colors, I could simply incorporate a few strategically placed copper and gold tones to marry the color palettes. For example, if you are using a beautiful bold teal or purple, try mixing in copper thread and a muted pumpkin color. The contrast is dynamic!
I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the strong buffalo check influence that seems to be everywhere. By itself, it may not seem like an ideal Fall fabric. However, by coordinating it with something as simple as burlap, twine or cork fabric, it anchors the modern look and provides a great base for a pumpkin arrangement creating a fresh, on trend, fall look.
With so many decorating options, it’s difficult to choose one style and I’m glad to have discovered the secret fusion glue–copper. My doorways and porch are accented with lanterns, but I’m adding pops of brightly colored bows and ribbon to them. Rather than using a machine quilted table runner, I’m trying a beaded table runner and I’m sprinkling in a few trendy glass pumpkins to decorate the dining table. With the small, but exciting updates I’ve made, it will be interesting to see if my family and friends agree with me.
