Unveil Wreath Sashes’ 10-Year History

Wreath Sashes History - A Decorative Tradition

It seems like every few years, there’s a new hot trend in the world of home decorating that leaves sewists and crafters scrambling to catch up with customer demands at art and craft shows and design trends on marketplaces such as Etsy. This year’s ‘must have’ item is no exception as it gives customers a cost-effective way to decorate for holidays, special events, and everyday style.

The big benefit: minimal storage requirements, endless theme possibilities, and affordable personalization! Wreath sashes began as a popular ‘regional’ product but have quietly and quickly blossomed into a nationwide hit as consumers have fallen in love with the beautifully simple concept.  They provide customers with a cost-effective way to decorate wreaths and stay on trend.

If you’re like me, you may be new to the world of wreath sashes and have a few questions. Who designed them?  Are they popular?  How do you make them?  In this helpful article, we will discuss their history, essential fabric selections, construction information, and how you can make/buy/sell wreath sashes.

Who Originally Designed Wreath Sashes?

Colleen Waguespack, an interior designer and founder and creative director of “Fig and Dove” created wreath sashes in Spring 2018 after she visited the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s exhibit “Heavenly Bodies.”  Inspired by the simple, yet elegant sashes adorning the papal garments, she realized a sash was the perfect design embellishment for Fig and Dove’s signature boxwood wreaths.  Her concept: tie a fabric sash with a simple knot at the base of a boxwood wreath.

The initial F & D wreath sashes were produced in 2018 from the same designer fabrics that were used in their Christmas stockings. Fig and Dove offered clients the option to add a beautifully embroidered monogram to the sash. This optional personalized touch cemented the product’s popularity with customers and the initial run of wreath sashes quickly sold out.  After the holidays, customers wanted more sashes for other holidays and life events such as weddings.

Fig and Dove quickly got to work and delivered.  They now offer a broad selection of wreath sashes for everyday use, all holidays, and special occasions.  Check out their wreath sash collection.

With the growing popularity of wreath sashes, other manufacturers began designing and cashing in on the product’s popularity. While there is a large variation in the materials used by other designers, wreath sashes are now sold on markets such as Etsy and Amazon.

What Materials are Used in a Wreath Sash?

Fig and Dove uses their signature high quality designer materials in their wreath sashes that are UV and Stain resistant making them an ideal choice for limited outdoor use.  Their bridal collection wreath sashes are constructed from premium quality cotton sateen fabric which closely matches the finish of their everyday wreath sashes.

Other designers use fabrics such as cotton, cotton/polyester blend, polyester, linen, linen blend, and silk.  Some fabrics are better suited for outdoor use.  When selecting fabric for wreath sashes, look for UV and stain resistant ratings if it will be used in an outdoor setting.  Most designers recommend that if using outdoors, the wreath and wreath sash are best suited for a covered area that is protected from the sun and weather.

Indoor wreath sashes have more fabric options as they do not need to withstand weather conditions. Wreath sashes that will be used for ‘one of’ indoor events such as weddings, graduations, baptisms, etc., can be constructed from more delicate fabrics such as satin or silk. For weddings, sashes offer brides an economical way to create high end designer looks.

Simply select a perfectly matched color of satin to your wedding party, embroider your initials and strategically hang wreaths with the sashes throughout the church. An added decorating bonus is to order shorter wreath sashes, monogram them with the wedding date and couple’s initials and tie them on each of the attendant’s bouquets.

What Size are Wreath Sashes?

While there is no set size, most sashes are offered in two different lengths—52 and 60 inches. The width can vary from 4.5 inches to 5.5 inches.  Some independent designers offer custom lengths for customers who have specific size needs.

How Much do Wreath Sashes Cost?

There is a wide range of pricing for a wreath sash.  Designer sashes can range in price from $50 to $125.  Economically priced blank sashes range in price from $10 to $50.

How do You Clean Wreath Sashes?

While cleaning options vary between fabrics and wreath sash manufacturer’s, the general rule is ‘spot clean only.’  For sashes that are made from dry clean only or extremely fragile fabrics, consult a professional dry cleaner.
