3 Easy Steps To Convert a Bowl Cozy Into a Basket Quickly
Quickly Convert a Bowl Cozy into a Basket in 3 Easy Steps
Bowl cozy patterns are great for handling hot items, but did you know that they are a great basic pattern for creating favor baskets for Easter and special events?
If you are looking for a quick and clever way to transform a bowl cozy into a favor/Easter basket, then read on! Today, I’m sharing my technique for converting a bowl cozy into a basket. These adorable baskets are perfect for holding candy favors at your next bridal/baby shower or holiday social.
Step 1: Make the bowl cozy
Follow the bowl cozy pattern as directed. You can use the bowl cozy pattern of your choice. I really liked the look of this bowl cozy since it resembled a basket bottom . This pattern was published by Craftsy. (It’s free!)
Normally, if you are making bowl cozy’s you would only use 100% cotton fabric, batting, and thread since they are used in microwave ovens. However, since we are using the pattern for another purpose, it’s important to label it “DISCLAIMER: for decorative use only. Do not microwave.” This is especially important if you use non-cotton thread, fabrics, or embellishments.
Step 2: Make the basket handle
To make the handle, you will need:
- Piece of fabric 2 ½” wide by 13” long
- 7/8” wide by 12” long piece of Pellon Flex Foam Sew in Stabilizer
Optional: 1 large safety pin, 2 decorative ribbons
Fold your fabric vertically, right sides together. Sew a seam using a 1/4” sew allowance. Leave ends open.
Turn fabric tube right side out. Attach your safety pin to one end of the Pellon Flex Foam. Thread it thru the fabric tube. Be sure to have an even amount of fabric on each end. You may need to adjust the foam in the tube until it lays flat. Once you have the foam inserted, remove the safety pin. I sewed a single row of straight stitching thru the center to keep it in place. (This is optional).
Step 3: Attach Handle to basket
Decide which sides you would like to hold the handle. On side one, measure ½” from top of side. Mark with either a water-soluble marker or tailor’s chalk on the INSIDE of the basket. Repeat this process on the OPPOSITE side.
Pin handle with the raw edges facing up along the line. Make sure the foam is sitting exactly at this line BUT NOT below. You want to sew as close as possible to the foam.
Sew in place with a straight stitch. It’s best to sew 3 lines of stitching. Trim seam allowance to 1/4″.
Flip handle up. Sew ¼” from edge of basket securing the handle in the upright position. Stitch in place using a straight stitch. Don’t forget to backstitch at the beginning and end.
OPTIONAL BONUS: Once you have the handle in place, you can decorate the outside with a ribbon, button, sequin applique, lace, etc. to cover the stitching. Be creative and choose a design that reflects the theme of your basket!
You are now finished!
