My 3-D Butterfly Sewing Tutorial Project with Sulky ™

My 3-D Butterfly Sewing Tutorial Project with Sulky ™

Years ago, when I was learning the basics of designing and creating wearable art (think of Bob Mackie clothing, quilted jackets, fancy sewing designs on clothes, etc.), Sulky ™ decorative thread and stabilizers were my preferred brand.  I always admired their beautiful color charts and daydreamed about future projects that would utilize the newest colors.

Today, with an extensive color palette (over 300 colors!) and a broad range of stabilizers, sewists can find the right supplies for their respective sewing projects.

My 3-D Butterfly Sewing Tutorial Project with Sulky ™ -Late last year, I learned that Sulky was searching for creators. They were looking for a few spring/summer projects to offer their customers with exclusive thread color palettes. I was so excited and immediately submitted an inquiry.  A few days later, I was asked to submit 2 different summer themed projects for consideration.  Both sewing tutorial projects needed to focus on the thread, so I decided to pitch a traditional and non-traditional concept. Several weeks later I learned that my 3D butterfly sewing project was selected.  I was very excited for the opportunity!  It took me several weeks to complete the assignment which included building the embroidery files, writing sewing tutorials/ directions, creating samples and working out any glitches with the files and directions.  Yes, it was a lot of work, but it was a great experience. Each butterfly is built on a fabric foundation and is embellished with bright threads.  I was inspired to use hand-painted Bali fabrics on my samples since they added additional detail without a lot of stitching. The butterflies can be used individually to adorn items such as signs or headbands or grouped together to create a beautiful arrangement on a wall. If you or someone you know is a butterfly lover and would like to purchase the curated thread palette, here’s the link.

Also included with each purchase is a sewing tutorial/ directions, sewing project suggestions and 2 downloadable embroidery files. This was a fun project!  I’m looking forward to collaborations in the future with other great companies.
