Sewing Tools Spotlight: French Curve Ruler – Sewing Toolkit

Pattern alterations are just a part of life when it comes to sewing your own clothing – and a curved ruler can be the perfect addition to your sewing tool arsenal to make the alteration process easier.

French curve ruler, also known as the armhole ruler

The French curve ruler, also known as the armhole ruler, is the most versatile curved ruler sewing tool – great for creating beautifully smooth curves on your patterns. It’s perfect for armholes, necklines, and more!

As an example, I have the top of a t-shirt front pattern piece drawn out. Let’s say we need to lower the armhole by 1 inch.

Another example of when a curved ruler will become a handy sewing tool is when adding seam allowances to non-straight portions of your pattern pieces.

First, draw in short dashes at your seam allowance about ½ inch apart along the curve, using your straight-edge ruler. You can just rotate the ruler as you make the marks.
